Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Tallahassee?
Here's something that surprises a lot of homeowners: you can't always just cut down a tree on your own property in Tallahassee. The city and Leon County both have rules designed to protect our tree canopy, which is one of the things that makes this area so green and pretty in the first place. Run afoul of those rules and you can end up with a fine that costs way more than the removal would have.
We're not attorneys and this isn't legal advice, but after years of doing this work in town, we've learned to spot when a tree is likely to need a permit — and we always sort that out with our customers before any cutting starts.
Why Tallahassee Protects Its Trees
Tallahassee takes its urban forest seriously. The canopy roads, the live oaks, the shade that keeps your power bill down in August — the city wants to preserve all of that. So they regulate the removal of certain trees, especially larger ones and protected species, to keep people from clear-cutting lots and stripping neighborhoods of their character.
Which Trees Usually Need a Permit
Generally speaking, the bigger the tree, the more likely it's protected. Large-diameter trees and certain protected species — live oaks being the classic example — tend to fall under the rules. Smaller ornamental trees often don't. But the specifics depend on the tree's size, species, location, and whether you're inside city limits or in the county. There are also exceptions for trees that are dead, dying, or an imminent hazard, which can be removed more easily — that's a relief after a storm.
How We Help
When we come out to give you a free estimate, figuring out the permit situation is part of the job. We'll look at the tree, give you our honest read on whether it likely needs a permit, and point you in the right direction for the paperwork. It's a lot easier to handle this on the front end than to deal with a code-enforcement headache after the fact.
What Happens If You Skip It
Removing a protected tree without the proper permit can lead to fines, and in some cases the city can require you to plant replacement trees. It's just not worth the gamble. The whole process is usually manageable when you know about it ahead of time, which is exactly why we bring it up early.
